Making Sense (and in Defense) of Game of Thrones Season 8

It's no understatement to say that the final season of Game of Thrones has left many fans disappointed, underwhelmed, and even angry. Many memes and rants have been made about how terrible it is, and how showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have ruined the legacy of HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's unfinished masterwork A Song of Ice and Fire. But is it as bad as many make it out to...

    Always loved Alien 3. As a kid, I'd never seen gore or cursing like that in a movie before. Like... "huh?! Is this allowed?!" Those who hated it just wanted Aliens all over again, but more, bigger, more shooting, more bullets, guns, bombs, military, etc... which would have sucked. I much prefer a trilogy (forgetting the 4th film) that's 3 distinct, unique styles from very different, brilliant directors, but in the same universe.

    Hmmm I am wondering what are the flaws of this movie? I am talking about Assembly cut? Newt and Hicks die. Good. Depression comes in. We have fiorina. Hopeless place. We have Newt's autopsy. We have the 'burial'. We have Xray scene. Our good mood is done. We have cool death scenes. Damn !!! This movie is really good. I know why it is hated so much?! Because of no happy endind. Because of Newt and HIck's death. Because of lack of action from Aliens. Sad.

    Halloween is literally the exact same thing tho. Most of the characters are disposable with like only Laurie and Loomis mattering. Friday Part 4 actually has more characters that are well realized than any of the Halloween movies. But since Laurie is in more than one movie with less depth than any of them in part 4 before a reboot with H20. But yeah a lot of people can be easily be tricked into thinking that because Laurie and Loomis are in more than one movie, no matter how bad the Halloween sequels are.

    Alien 3 is amazing. I always choose the Director's Cut, of course. The film is gloomy, gritty and grim, with an incredible production design, perhaps the best score in the series by Elliot Goldenthal and a gorgeous color palette. Charles Dance as Clemens is great and Charles S. Dutton may be putting in the best performance of his career. Alien 3 is very bold; it kills off Hicks, Newt and Bishop in the opening. It also kills off the love interest AND Ripley dies as well. And it's directed by perhaps my favorite director - David Fincher - what's not to like? Alien 3 is truly great, especially considering all the behind-the-scenes drama.

    Alien 3 is a underappreciated masterpiece. With all its flaws. The ambient, the score, the acting. I understand that from the production prespective was as total mess but that does not make the final product less worthy.

    The criticisms aimed at Alien 3, for me, should have gone to Alien 4 (Resurrection) which is the weakest and ugliest in the series. Fincher's original 'cut' is superior to the released version; the only thing I dislike in 3 is the 'special effects'. Aliens is a great rollercoaster but as usual with Cameron's films he populates his films with what sound like a cast of truck drivers. Yes, he was once a truck driver in real life but why does he keep doing it?! The most impressive production design was Alien 5 (Covenant) especially on the ship; such staggering detail. Here's to more Alien films.

    I m late here but I was rewatching the first Alien after watching some Alien: Isolation gameplay (again) and the whole thing sucked me in the whole lore again. When I first saw the original Alien film I was about 10-11 years old (I first wached it on VHS 6 years after its theatrical release I think) my first thoughts when the Jockey was presented was that the aliens were probably some kind of weapon that got out of hand and destroyed those carrying it (yes although very young thats what I was thinking). My understanding remains the same since then, the "Jockeys" were the creators of the Xenomorphs as a weapon and they got "destroyed" (not the whole species off course) by their own weapon. That would explain the very specific and useful destructive property of the Xenomorph blood and also the need for a host to fully develop and the extreme adaptiveness to use unknown species (humans) as hosts. I think the whole story then wanted to reflect and comment on the cold war situation and the danger of nuclear weapons getting out of hand but did it subtly in a fantastic way through a scifi horror film (it also explored other themes like motherhood and corporate power). What happened with the prequels is that R.Scott wanted to make a film about A.I. (again) and the dangers that come with it plus some commentary about religions on top of that... He wanted to play with the creator/creation concept.. He just wanted a film on those topics and just slapped the Alien name on it because he believed he would succeed in both aspects (a good horror scifi film with a deeper meaning) like he did the first time and he would get a standing ovation on every theater for his skills.... Probably because he himself has some kind of god complex about his skills and wanted to showoff. The problem is he didnt care about the consequences and contradictions it would create for/against the first film because he did not respect the first film and its fans... It was his own to do whatever he wants.. He shifted the whole focus on manmade androids in a movie that is supposed to be about an exremely dangerous alien weapon/species (xenomorphs) and an exremely advanced and ancient alien race (jockeys).

    I don't quite agree with you there, or at least I think the multiplayer aspect should be top of the list instead of in the back half. LOVE Journey, one of the best games ever made, and gave me incredible feels the first time I played it, and still great ones the twentieth... but without the multiplayer, it would be almost just as good as a beautiful playthrough to watch on UA-cam. The multiplayer is to me the only aspect of it that makes it a videogame-only experience worth living. Another good candidate is Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. While not quite a masterpiece like Journey, it has a particular bit around the end that can only be felt by playing it, and even better, that is directly related to the gameplay mechanics. My throat dries up just thinking about it. We need more games like these two.

      Yeah, the punishment isn't have sex and you die, it's that you can't have indulgence without responsibility. Sure it's simple, but these are horror/slasher movies. Halloween is also simple in it's theming, because slasher films work better by being simple. These films aren't TCM as that film actually has way more to say.

    Frankly, Fincher saved it. It was seriously flawed before he ever became part of the project and the fact that something good came out of that mess is testimony to Fincher's skill as a director, even with studio constraints. We were teased with suggestions that the third Alien film would be MORE epic than Aliens, but it fell short of that, way short. I remember at the time when it came out that even though I really enjoyed it as the "end" of the alien/Ripley saga I also felt at the time that it didn't feel like a Hollywood blockbuster at all and felt more like those slower and cheaper made indie and foreign films we used to rent from the video place.

  • @AngelicusImmortus
    @AngelicusImmortus 9 місяців тому

    i like the film. i just wish it had gone with Fincher's first idea. He wanted to have Ripley die, and have Hicks trying to convince the convicts about the Alien whilst protecting Newt from them. so, he had the idea of Ripley dying on screen at the start before Hicks and Newt are found. Clemens tries to help Hicks but does get killed. the chest burster comes from the dog and theres a face off between the two forms, after all, Fincher brought in the idea that the Alien changes depending on the host. so here. so, Ripley is greeted by an Alien she doesnt expect. Meaning she is unable to adapt in time to kill it. Then Hicks, is also shocked by it, but is more able to react due to being a Marine used to the "bug hunt" stuff spoken about in Aliens. So Newt is in a totally unsafe environment, no one is safe except Hicks. The final chest burster dying in the melted metal, is Clemens or the "dumb" prison guard. in the end we got what we got story wise. but remember Fincher got fired and rehired twice and was locked out of the editing studio, so its a difficult one. They tried to end his career and he came back with the undeniably epic Seven. So Hicks is left with a few prisoners and Newt, with Hicks claiming to be a prisoner and Newt a survivor of the crashed ship; to hide the Alien info from the Corporation.

    A³ is the type of movie that could never be made today. Its a very ballsy film that doesnt pander to the audience. Its themes are much darker and complex than the others. It creates a brutal world that makes ripley the hero she is by facing it. I love A³
